Belle Tire Friendship Tournament Results

The Midget A Ice Ice Hawks girls hockey team sponsored by Playtex Sports had a challenging weekend. They competed in the Belle Tire North American Friendship Tournament in Michigan.

The first game was against the Detroit Honeybaked U17 team. The Ice Hawks kept Honeybaked at bay for the first period, but after two goals against in the second and then the third, they came up on the wrong end of a 4-0 loss.

Friday evening the Ice Hawks faced the Mississauga Chiefs AA team. After falling behind early, the Ice Hawks fought back and came away with a 6-5 victory. Scoring for the Ice Hawks Vanessa Armstrong (Gorrie) with three, Kellie Rawn (Mount Forest), Brittany Butcher (Chatsworth) and Jenah Van Loon (Walkerton) with one each. Assists went to Armstrong and Butcher with two each and Megan Yake (Mount Forest), Jenah Van Loon and Jaime Van Loon (Walkerton) with one.

Saturday morning the girls took to the ice against the Clarington Flames AA team. It was a back and forth game, but the Ice Hawks came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 score.

After falling behind, the girls worked the powerplay to perfection, with Jaime Van Loon and Kellie Bradley (Tara) setting up Taylor Vokes to tie the score. Again the Flames took the lead, but once again the Ice Hawks tied it up with an unassisted goal from Butcher. Unfortunately, the Flames scored the winning goal. Ice Hawks goalie Haileigh Duplantis (Port Elgin) was the main reason the score was so close. She made several stupendous saves through out the whole game.

With a 1-2 record, the Ice Hawks faced the Windsor Wildcats AA team in the Silver division quarter-finals.

The Ice Hawks outshot and outskated the Wildcats, but the Wildcats' goalie made many jaw dropping saves. Standing tall for the Ice Hawks was goalie Micaela Stutzki (Chesley) who made several highlight reel saves throughout the game. No one found the back of the net through the first three periods and even two overtime periods. It took a shootout for the Wildcats to send the Ice Cats home with a 1-0 loss.

Despite the 1-3 record over the weekend, the Midget A Ice Ice Hawks girls hockey team sponsored by Playtex Sports/Energizer played hard and gave the four Midget AA teams all they could handle all weekend.

Next weekend the girls hit the road with a Saturday game against the Aurora Panthers and a Sunday game against the Clearveiw Ice Cats....... by Jon Van Loon
