Midget "A" Team Wins Gold

The Midget A Owen Sound Ice Hawks girls hockey team sponsored by Playtex Sport / Energizer travelled to Orangeville to compete in their Annual Sweetheart Tournament and walked away with the championship.

On Friday the Ice Hawks faced the host Orangeville Tigers. Both teams started slowly. In the second period Vanessa Armstrong (Gorrie) opened the scoring with a powerplay goal; with the help of Kellie Bradley (Tara) and Janine Vanderschot (Owen Sound). Orangeville answerd back later in the second, tying the score.

Neither team found the back of the net again and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Saturday morning, the Ice Hawks took on the Hamilton Hawks and came away with a hard fought 2-1 victory. Again the girls started slowly and fell behind 1-0. Megan Yake (Mount Forest) scored, to tie the game, set up by Bradley. The girls took the lead when Natalie Lupo-Flewelling (Flesherton) got the puck to Bradley, who made a perfect goalmouth pass to Vanderschot, who put it past the Hawks goalie.

Saturday night the Ice Hawks took on the North Simcoe Capitals. The game was scoreless until the third period, when Jenah Van Loon (Walkerton) chipped the puck up to Armstrong who drove to the net and put it over the goalie's shoulder to open the scoring. Armstrong found the back of the net again with an almost identical goal, putting the puck over the goalie's shoulder, assists went to Brittany Butcher (Owen Sound) and Taylor Vokes (Chatsworth). Armstrong finished off the natural hat trick when she banged in a rebound from Jenah Van Loon.

Vanderschot rounded out the scoring for the Ice Hawks, set up by Vokes and Yake. The Capitals only managed to put one puck past goalie Micaela Stutzki (Chesley), who earned the 4-1 victory.

That win put the girls in the gold medal game against the Orangeville Tigers.

The Ice Hawks opened the scoring in the first period while killing a penalty. Jaime Van Loon (Walkerton) chipped the puck up to Bradley, who drove behind the net. Bradley then centered it to Yake, who blasted it past the Tiger's goalie.

Both teams fought hard the rest of the game, but it remained 1-0 until the last minute of the game. With the Tiger's goalie on the bench and a faceoff deep in the Ice Hawks end, Jenah Van Loon won the faceoff to Jaime Van Loon, who put the puck down the ice, into the Tiger's goal to secure the 2-0 victory. Haileigh Duplantis (Port Elgin) earned the shutout.

Next weekend the The Midget A Owen Sound Ice Ice Hawks start their league playoffs. Saturday they host the Toronto Leaside Wildcats at the Julie MacArthur Arena at 2:30 pm. On Sunday they travel to Toronto for game two of the playoffs with the Wildcats. by Jon Van Loon
