Back to Back Wins to Take the Midget A Team to 2nd Round

The Midget A Owen Sound Ice Hawks girls hockey team sponsored by Playtex Sport / Energizer started the first round of Lower Lakes playoffs and swept the Toronto Leaside Wildcats in two straight games.

On Saturday the Wildcats came to Owen Sound and the Ice Hawks came away with a 1-0 victory.

The play was back and forth until the third when Kellie Rawn (Mount Forest) fed the puck to Nicole Ballagh-Evans (Chatsworth) behind the net. Ballagh-Evans then put the puck right on Mckenna Yost's (Chatsworth) stick, who wasted no time getting it past the Wildcat's goalie. Even with the Wildcat's goalie pulled for an extra attacker for the final minute of the game, they could not get one past goalie Micaela Stutzki (Chesley), who earned the shutout.

On Sunday the Ice Hawks made the trip to Toronto for a hard fought 2-1 win.

Both teams were ready to play and came out hitting and shooting. Kellie Bradley (Tara) opened the scoring in the first period, with assists going to Rawn and Molly Halpin (Port Elgin). The Wildcats kept the pressure on and put one past Haileigh Duplantis (Port Elgin), who had made several spectacular saves right before that.

In the third period the teams traded chances until the last minute when Rawn banged in a rebound from Megan Yake (Mount Forest) while on the powerplay. Again the Wildcats pulled their goalie and put the pressure on to tie the game, but Duplantis stood tall and kept the puck out of the net.
