Bauer World Hockey Invite Tournament Results

The Midget A girls hockey team sponsored by Playtex Sport / Energizer travelled to Detroit, Michigan to compete in the Bauer World Hockey Invite tournament.

The girls opened up the tournament Friday morning against the Aurora Panthers. It was a hard fought game, but the Ice Cats came out on the wrong end of a 2-0 game.

Friday afternoon, the girls looked to get back on track with a game against the Anaheim Lady Ducks. The Ice Hawks were all over the Ducks from the opening faceoff. Kellie Rawn (Mount Forest) opened the scoring, with assists going to Molly Halpin (Port Elgin) and Taylor Vokes (Chatsworth). Brittany Butcher increased the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted marker.

By the end of the game, the Ice Hawks put two more pucks past the Ducks goalie. Rawn scored her second of the game with help from Vanessa Armstrong (Gorrie); and Vokes rounded out the scoring with a blast from the point.

Saturday morning had the girls facing the Durham West Lightning. Butcher got the ball rolling with her second goal of the tournament, assists going to Janine Vanderschot (Owen Sound) and Armstrong. Rawn scored again, assisted by Halpin.

With the score 2-0 the Lightning coach pulled the goalie with five minutes left in the game. While they did get one puck by Haileigh Duplantis (Port Elgin), Butcher, assisted by Halpin and Megan Yake, assisted by Armstrong took advantage and scored empty netters.

With that victory the Ice Hawks finished the round robin in second place and faced the Saugeen Maitland Lightning in the quarterfinals.

The girls were ready to go and controlled the play. The Ice Hawks opened the scoring when Vanderschot set up Butcher, who put the puck up and over the Lightning goalie. In the second period The Lightning fought back and scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Both teams had plenty of scoring chances in the third, but the Ice Hawks spent too much time in the penalty box and were unable to get the equalizer.
