Owen Sound Ice Hawks Peewee HL Consolation Champs

On Saturday March 23, 2013, the Owen Sound Ice Hawks Peewee HL team skated hard onto the ice with determination to win.  Their opponent, first place team Saugeen Shores HL, would be no easy match.  It was an intense game.  Defensemen Kalie Armstrong, Amy Lefebvre, Megan Merner, and Rebecca VanDrunen, battled hard to limit shots on net. Showing no mercy, Saugeen Shores continually drove the net trying to put one past goalie Cassidy Caswell.  Making spectacular saves Cassidy stole the show stopping over 30 shots on net and earning game MVP.

It wasn’t until late in the third when Saugeen finally found the back of the net.  With the clock ticking, forwards Bonnie Slocombe, Kristen Hamelin, Hannah Desroches battled hard to create scoring opportunity. Despite their great efforts, the team could not put one past the Saugeen Shores goalie and the game ended 1 -0 for Saugeen.

Game two the girls came out strong and played with confidence against Walkerton.  Katelynn Lavergne scored the first two goals with assists from Sarah Weatherhead, Hannah Desroches, and Kate Patton. On a roll, Kate continued the scoring streak to snipe two more goals with assists going to Rebecca and Kristen.  Mercedes Culbert battled hard in the corners to hold the lead.  Once again, it was another solid performance by our defense limiting the shots on net. The girls earned a decisive 4 – 1 win this game.  Katelynn earned game MVP for her effort.

After two games, the points were tallied to determine the finals.   Half a point short of the championship game, the Owen Sound Peewee HL girls moved on to the consolation championship in the Builders division.  Coach John knew it would be no easy match against the Kincardine HL team which finished second in the league, but the girls were pumped and he had no doubts they would take this one.  The starting line, Kate, Katelynn, and Mercedes wasted no time.   Kate made a great pass to Katelynn, Katelynn maneuvered the puck through several opponents for the shot, but it was Mercedes that would score the winning goal on the rebound.  Cassidy stood tall in net and the team continued to work hard throughout the game to hold the lead.  With two minutes left in the third period, the Owen Sound team took a penalty.  The Kincardine coach wasted no time pulling their goalie for the six on four advantage.   Defenseman Amy, Rebecca, Megan, and Kalie kept the puck to the outside giving Kincardine little opportunity. The fans continued to cheer the girls on counting down the seconds to their victory.

Sarah earned game MVP and will be greatly missed by her teammates as she moves on to Bantam next year.

Special thanks to coaches John Armstrong, Kevin Paupst, Brian Lavergne, team manager Janette Patton, and trainer Laura VanDrunen for their commitment and making a fun and successful hockey season for the Owen Sound Ice Hawks Peewee HL girls.  Special thanks as well to Cory Armstrong for writing the articles this year and keeping everyone up to date with the team!
