Peewee HL Ice Hawks Lace Up Their Skates On October 20, 2012, the Owen Sound Peewee HL Girls Ice Hawks headed to Durham for their first game of the season.  The change room was filled with excitement as the girls laced up their skates and pulled on their jerseys.   With no one designated as goalie, Cassidy Caswell courageously volunteered for the challenging position.   At 12:03, the girls eagerly lined up and the puck dropped.  Cassidy Caswell stood tall to face her first shot in net and quickly pounced on the puck to make the save.  Kate Patton opened the scoring in the first period at 4:40. Durham responded with an attack on net.

Our defense of Hannah DesRosches, Megan Merner, Leah Patchell, Rebecca VanDrunen, and Kalie Armstrong worked vigorously to protect their goaltender.  The second period was filled with action as Kate Patton and Amy Lefebvre charged from the blue line for a 2 on 1, but the shot was deflected by Durham’s experienced goaltender.  Wingers Sarah Weatherhead, Kristen Hamelin, and Bonnie Slocombe battled hard to create lots of scoring opportunities.  Kate taking a brilliant pass from Mercedes Culbert rushed into the offensive zone and fired the puck into the top corner of the net to keep the score close at the end of the second period.    The girls working hard against the strong Durham team started to lose steam in the third period.  Durham took advantage to take a decisive lead.  Cassidy was plummeted with shots.  From the face-off circle, Katelyn Lavergne fired the puck just missing the net by inches.  Determined to score, Katelyn skated the puck around and drove a beauty wrist shot straight into the back of the net.     Coaches John Armstrong and Kevin Paupst were pleased with the game results and felt the final 8 – 3 score in Durham’s favour was not representative of the close game played.

The girls showed great improvement on October 28th and November 3rd playing a home and away against Saugeen Shores both ending in 3 – 0 wins for Saugeen.  Defensemen Hannah, Kalie, Rebecca, and Megan played the puck well into the corners to limit the number of shots on net.   Goaltender Cassidy faced her first breakaway and did not disappoint the crowd making a spectacular save.  Forwards Mercedes, Kristen, Amy, and Bonnie had to work extra hard to replace veterans Sarah, Katelyn and Kate who were each sick or away for one of the games.
