Owen Sound Girls Hockey: Return to Hockey Handbook
Submitted By Laura Vandrunen on Wed 02 17, 21
Over the past 11 months we have seen many changes to make our community safe under the threat of COVID 19.  This will also be the case in our hockey community.

Our goal for the remainder of the season is for our Ice Hawks to have fun and develop hockey skills in a safe environment.  We will follow OWHA (Ontario Women’s Hockey Association) Return to Hockey Framework along with current City of Owen Sound and Public Health Grey Bruce guidelines to ensure a safe return to hockey.  This season will continue to be very different than any other season!

In order to have a safe and fun season, we will need to remember that:

  • Hockey will be different

  • We will need to be flexible

  • We will need act responsibly to keep our hockey family safe

Current Owen Sound Recreation Facility Guidelines to support safety through physical distancing (subject to change):

  • 25 participants on-ice per ice surface

  • 50 participants/spectators allowed in vicinity of each ice pad

  • 2 dressing rooms open per ice slot

  • 10 participants max per dressing room with extra seating in designated areas for players to put on/take off skates, helmets and gloves (Dressing room participants include volunteers/den moms)

COVID 19 Education:  Please review the following links to help keep our hockey family safe.

  1. Respiratory Etiquette:

  2. Hand Hygiene:

  3. Physical Distancing:

  4. Use of Personal Protective Equipment:

What do we need to do before, during, and after our ice times?

  1. Self-monitor:  Review the OWHA Health Screening Questionnaire.  If you have any of the symptoms, do not go to the arena. Let your trainer know.

  2. Put on your gear before coming to the arena.  (Players are now allowed to enter the arena in street clothes or partial gear.  If you feel more comfortable dressing at home to limit time in the dressing room, please do so!  See below for the Addendum to our Return to Hockey Protocol for more details.)

  3. Arrive at your ice time NO EARLIER than 15 minutes before the practice/game begins.

  4. Each player can be accompanied by one adult only.

  5. A team official/designate will meet you at the door to ask screening questions and record attendance.

  6. Players/parents/staff are to wear a mask upon entering the arena.  Face coverings are not required to be worn on the ice.  Use hand sanitizer as soon as you enter the facility.  Practice good hygiene while at the arena. Use hand sanitizer as you leave the facility.

  7. All players/parents/staff must follow physical distancing guidelines (6 feet apart) at all times while in the facility.

  8. There will be two dressing rooms open per ice time.  Two den moms are required at all times in the dressing room, with a maximum capacity of 10 at a time.  Rink side bleachers are available for additional space.

  9. Absolutely NO SHARING of food or drinks.  Each player is to have an individual water bottle properly labelled.  Bottles must be spaced 2 m apart and properly sanitized after each practice.

  10.   No loitering – all participants must vacate facility within 20 minutes following ice time.

COVID 19 Response Plan:

  1. A COVID 19 Oversight committee, chaired by Laura VanDrunen, will consist of a trainer/parent from each team.

  2. We will update the OSGH website and email our members with any changes to the Return to Hockey Protocol.

  3. A team official/designate will record screening results on the OWHA Tracking Sheet.  This form will be forwarded to the Covid 19 Oversight Committee if someone becomes unwell during an ice time or if requested by public health for tracking purposes.

  4. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Laura VanDrunen (519-270-7729).
