Ice Hawks Girls Initiation Program
Submitted By Laura Vandrunen on Tue 06 05, 18
Girls Hockey in Owen Sound has grown leaps and bounds in recent years, especially at the younger age groups.  2017/18 was our most successful year to-date for our Initiation and Novice teams; we had 26 players participate in our Initiation/Development group and a successful Novice Rep team that qualified for Provincials.

For 2018/19 we hope to have even more young players participate in girls hockey, and will be adapting to Hockey Canada’s change to Cross-Ice and Half-Ice Hockey.  For more information on this, please visit www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/hockey-programs.

The impact of this change for your player will depend on their age.

Players born in 2010 are unaffected.  Players born in 2011 can be included on a Novice (full-ice) roster for the 2018/19 season but will move to a Half-Ice format for 2019/20.  Players born in 2012 or younger cannot be included on a Novice (full-ice) roster for the current season, but can play games in a Cross-Ice or Half-Ice format.

Ice Hawks Initiation Program:

  • 2 Ice-times per week (may vary during holidays).  Focus is on Fun and Skill Development.

  • 2017/18 schedule was Tuesdays 6-7pm and Saturdays 8:45-9:45am.  2018 schedule will be similar, but exact schedule TBD.

  • The program will be open to players from “learn-to-skate” and up.  New hockey players of Novice and Atom ages are welcome and may graduate to other teams during the season.

  • Players are grouped based on age and skill in order to keep practices challenging.

Introduction to Games:

For initiation players that are ready to experience game play, we will be running inter-squad games at the Cross-Ice or Half-Ice format. These games will begin at mid-season during regular practice times.  We have started to reach out to other organizations with IP programs in the hope of organizing mini-tournaments or exhibition games with other teams.  (If this can be done, there will be additional cost to cover ice time.)

If you have any questions, please contact our Initiation Head Coach, Jeremy McCoubrey[email protected]
