Novice C Ice Hawks are WOAA Champions!!
Our Service Master and Germania Mutual Insurance Novice C Ice Hawks travelled to Ripley on Saturday, April 2nd to compete in the 2016 WOAA Year End Tournament for the Girls' Novice division. They completed the regular season with an impressive record of 11-0-1, but all teams improved throughout the season and there were no guaranteed outcomes in this tournament!
In their first game, Owen Sound faced the 4th ranked TCDMHA Rebels, defeating them by a score of 3-0. Ice Hawks goals were scored by Madison Rayner, River Emonts and Zoe Beaupre. A strong defensive effort by Sarah Cowan, Leisl Stata, Alexis Stephenson, Maya Beirnes, Abby McMillan, and Avery MacDonald and excellent back-checking by all forwards contributed to Sarah VanDrunen's shut out.
The Ice Hawks' win in the first game qualified them for a match-up against the Walkerton Capitals for the WOAA Novice Girls' Division Championship. It was a very close game, but the Ice Hawks' centre Zoe Beaupre scored with 2:51 remaining in the third period to move ahead by a score of 3-2. The last two minutes of the game were intense, as Walkerton pulled their goalie and their six skaters kept the puck in Owen Sounds end. They were unable to get a shot on net, and the Owen Sound Novice C Ice Hawks became the first Novice team to clinch a WOAA Division Championship.
Our Novice C Ice Hawks Captain, Elise Nair, proudly accepted the Dave Neilson Memorial Trophy for her team. It has been 9 years since this trophy has been awarded to a team, as it has been that long since the last Novice C Girls' division in the WOAA.
Congratulations on your achievement, Novice C Ice Hawks players and staff! Good luck at Provincials next week!
