International Silver Stick Tournament
The Dunblane and Turners Owen Sound Ice Hawks Novice C competed in the International Silver Stick Finals hosted by Saugeen Shores on the 7th February.  Their first tournament game was the first Novice game in the history of Owen Sound Girls Hockey.

Coming out on the wrong side of a 4 – 0 score (one goal was scored into an empty net with the goalie pulled) was understandable against a seasoned opponent.  However the signs were favourable that the Ice Hawks would steadily improve.  While they dominated play in the 1st period, they just couldn’t turn on the red light.  Credit to the South Huron Sabres, a team out of the Exeter area. They were able to take advantage of their chances as the game progressed.  Player of the game honours was given to Tiegen Berne.

Using this first game as a measuring stick, positives were reinforced, and lines were juggled.  A concern was replacing our missing goaltender who couldn’t attend the second game. Forward Alexa Todd  proved more than ready for the task as she confidently stepped in with a stellar performance, backstopping her team to an impressive 3 – 1 win over the BCH Ice Stars.  For interest, BCH are from the Bayfield/Clinton/Hensall/Seaforth area.  Fuelled by their strong initial game outing, the players played dominating hockey. Player of the game honours was given to Dani Strong.

Their third game of the day pitted the Ice Hawks against BCH in an elimination game with the winner advancing to the Finals.  The game was a fan’s delight and with smiles on every player’s face the Hawks soared with chances time and again but the BCH goalie was equally impressive with her strong performance.  The game ended in a scoreless tie with overtime needed to decide the winner. Four aside and sudden victory was the order.  The Hawks shooters continued to be stymied and it appeared a shootout loomed. But the Hockey Gods decided otherwise. A BCH forward found a burst of energy and raced down the ice on a breakaway to send her team to victory.

The IceHawks certainly deserved a better result but congratulations to BCH who didn’t give in. Player of the game for Owen Sound was Courtney Cuillerier.

Record Book: Keirsten Henrich scored the first goal in the history of our Novice program and the first win in nets goes to Alexa Todd.
