2 More Wins for the Midget A Team

The Midget A Ice Ice Hawks girls hockey team sponsored by Playtex Sports/Energizer are heading into the Christmas break on a roll after winning two more games this past weekend.

On Saturday the girls travelled to Midland to take on the first place North Simcoe Capitals. The Ice Hawks came out flying. Vanessa Armstrong (Gorrie) opened the scoring, set up by Kellie Bradley (Tara). Jaime Van Loon (Walkerton) set up Bradley on a breakaway and she ripped a shot high gloveside.

Later, Brittany Butcher (Owen Sound) was awarded a penalty shot when she was taken down on a breakway. She made no mistake and put the puck under the crossbar to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Ice Hawks did not let up, with Kellie Rawn (Mount Forest) scoring an unassisted marker and then Butcher scored again, assisted by Bradley to end the period.

The Capitals woke up in the second period and put pressure on, but goalie Miceala Stutzki (Chesley) stood tall and only let one puck get past her preserving the 5-1 win.

Sunday the girls took on the Barrie Sharks and skated away with a 4-1 victory.

The Sharks came out strong and were controlling the play early, testing goalie Haileigh Duplantis (Port Elgin). The Ice Hawks then came to life, with Bradley scoring an almost identical goal as yesterday, top corner assisted by Jaime Van Loon and Rawn. Right after that, Jenah Van Loon (Walkerton) set up Butcher to put the Ice Hawks up 2-0.

In the third period, Megan Yake (Mount Forest), while shorthanded, outskated the defence, cut into the front of the net and chipped the puck over the goalie's pad to increase the lead. On the next shift, Yake got a peice of  Taylor Vokes' (Chatsworth) point shot and the puck found its way in front of the net; where Vanderschot banged it in while laying on her stomach.

The Sharks kept up their attack, but could only manage one late goal.

The Midget A Ice Ice Hawks girls hockey team sponsored by Playtex Sports/Energizer hope to add to their five game winning streak on December 30, when they take on the Orangeville Tigers at noon at the Julie McArthur arena.  by Jon Van Loon
