Opportunities to share the Ice with Olympic Talent for our Ice Hawks "A" teams
In December 2012, the players from Owen Sound 'A' teams were invited to some skating coaching sessions with Olympic team members, learning some skating techniques from world-class athletes.

The fundamentals of what speed skaters, and hockey players do is highly similar.  For that reason, the Ice Hawks welcomed Cindy and Amanda Overland to a local rink over the Christmas break, to share some of their techniques with our girls' hockey teams. These ladies chose speed skating as their sport of choice, but were able to apply their knowledge of skating to help our hockey players improve their game.   In three separate sessions, they shared some of their ideas to improve speed and form while skating while playing hockey.
The Owen Sound girls were exposed not only to skating training, but to a family of athletes that were able to achieve a long list of accomplishments, among them; Jr. World Championship Team Member for 2 years, then Senior World Championship Team Member for 5 years, Canadian All Round Champion 1995-2000, Athlete of the Year, and Olympic Team Member, and finally an inductee into the speed skating sports Hall of Fame.
Amanda and Cindy shared their time with our girls to also promote the importance of fitness and sustainability throughout the season.  They know that training, and fitness are key to being at the top of your sport.  Some of the best hockey players, (Cindy uses Joe Sakic as her example) know the importance of this, along with great technique in skating stride in order to increase speed and get into scoring chances during hockey games.
The players in this organization and their parents, should be grateful for the opportunities provided to our girls playing this level of hockey.  Cindy and Amanda and their father, who also coached the Cambridge Speed Skating Club for 35 years, provided some mentoring to our girls, and were good role models for our girls.  Amanda brought her silver medal to show the players, and I am sure for most players, that was their first time seeing an Olympic Medal in person.
Thanks go to Louis P. Strezos and Associates, Wiarton Golf, and Mar Wind for subsidizing the cost of this experience for the girls.  Thanks to Terri and Scott Maue for setting this up, and of course, we need to extend thanks to the Overland Family for spending time with our girls, and despite the nasty flu bug, spending quality time with our girls on the ice.
